The Tony Award-winning musical Fun Home, which is sponsored by Bruno Wang Productions, will open in London this summer at the Young Vic.
Fun Home will be directed by Sam Gold, one of New York’s most important up-and-coming directors. Gold has just directed David Oyelowo and Daniel Craig in Othello at the New York Theatre Workshop and in 2016 was responsible for The Flick at the National Theatre in London, which received five-star reviews.
When Fun Home was staged on Broadway, it won five Tonys – including one for Gold (Best Direction) and Best Musical overall. It also won Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score and Best Leading Actor in a Musical. Fun Home was also nominated in the 2016 Grammy Awards for Best Musical Theatre Album.
Lisa Kron (2.5 Minute Ride, Well) wrote the book and lyrics for Fun Home, teaming up with composer Jeanine Tesori (Shrek The Musical and Caroline, or Change), widely acknowledged as the most prolific and honoured female theatrical composer in history, with five Broadway musicals and five Tony Award nominations to her name.
The story itself is based on the bestselling graphic novel by Alison Bechdel, which tells of Bechdel’s coming out and how honesty about her sexuality had a tragic and unexpected effect on her father. The Fun Home of the title is the funeral parlour where the family grow up.
Bechdel has said she never imagined the musical would be such as success. “I only agreed to the idea of it at all,” she told The Observer, “because I didn’t know what I was getting into. It seemed harmless enough. I’m really glad I said yes. They [Kron and Tesori] made something beautiful out of it.”
